Today Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is much more than a great idea to make the world a better place, it is something that is firmly on the boardroom agenda and of strategic importance to any and every business. Corporate Social Responsibility is about considering the impact the business has on people the environment and society at large and identifying appropriate actions in response to this. Most companies now publish CSR policies or include details of key initiatives within annual reports, however the supply chain is the one area that presents the most challenges and finding acceptable solutions here continues to elude many organisations. The business case for CSR has never been so strong. Whilst corporate philanthropy still remains a key driver for a handful of businesses; pressures such as changing consumer and shareholder expectations, reducing risk of brand damage and emerging legislative obligations have shifted action for CSR from a 'nice to do' to a 'must do'. Achieving CSR in the supply chain is particularly difficult as many of the detrimental practices often lie many contractual steps removed in under-developed countries, where standard are less and international trading can hide what happens.
